First time I made these were for Sophie’s birthday party. The girls got to decorate their own fairy wands, a great success. I made way to many and put the leftovers stars in the freezer.
A week later we had a Xmas party from playgroup, we slept in. I dug these out, quickly decorated them and had dish to bring. A huge hit, they were gone very quickly. Another party today, again a double batch to also stock the freezer for a party later this week.
Basic butter cookie dough (Dutch: zandkoekjes)
250gr flour
100gr sugar
125gr butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla paste (optional)
Cream together the butter and sugar, then add the rest. The dough just comes together, add a little butter if it stays crumbly.
This dough is great for any type of cookie cutter. I’ve got a batch of dough waiting in the fridge for the kids to freestyle with.
Roll the dough out to about 5mm thick on a floured surface, move to a baking tray and bake for about 15 minutes in the oven on 160C degrees. Watch them once they start to colour get them out. Let them cool on the baking tray.
The stars above are two thin cookies lightly pressed together with an icy pole stick in between.
Keep them plain or make some simple icing (icing sugar with a couple of drops of water/cordial or food colouring) to make the sprinkles stick.
